SSL Team Morocco: Sailing beyond borders

SSL Team Morocco is not just a sailing team — it's a national mission to elevate Moroccan sailing to the global stage. As the team prepares for the prestigious SSL Gold Cup 2026, they bring a unique blend to promote sailing across North Africa.

At the helm of the Moroccan team stands Simon Boussikouk, a true veteran of the sport. A former Vice President of the Moroccan Sailing Federation and national champion in both Optimist and ILCA classes, Simon has dedicated his life to sailing since the age of five. He has competed in top offshore events such as the Ruta del Sol Regatta (multiple-time winner), and even sailed around the world as part of the Globe 40.

Tactician Hakim Hasni brings a decade of national team experience and deep insight into Morocco’s sailing journey. A five-time national champion and international ILCA competitor, Hakim sees SSL as more than a competition:

“It’s not just racing — it’s a professional opportunity and a national project. We want to promote sailing not only in Morocco but across Africa.”

He highlights the team’s diverse background: a mix of professional athletes, instructors, and new talents working together to grow the sport both at home and abroad.

Among the new faces making waves is Zineb Hariss, Moroccan champion in the ILCA 6 class and a powerful voice in the team. Her dream? To qualify Morocco for the 2028 Olympics and become one of the youngest female athletes on the national SSL team.

Currently pursuing international law and security studies in Nice, Zineb balances academia with elite sport.

The squad reflects a true spectrum of Moroccan sailing — from youth program graduates to seasoned instructors. Some highlights include: Khalid Ezzaid – a champion since the '90s, with international regatta wins and decades of experience, Walid Moudni – with over 40 crossings of the Strait of Gibraltar, combining dinghy and keelboat expertise, Kautar Ben Jamaa & Rahmani Oumaima – women shaping the future of Moroccan sailing as instructors and competitors, Abdessamad Saoud, Marouane Moussa, Ali Doublali – veteran keelboat racers with a mission to pass their knowledge to the next generation.

Despite their different paths, the team is united by a shared goal: to compete with the world’s best and grow a strong, inclusive sailing culture back home.

The SSL Gold Cup is more than a race — it's a symbol of what’s possible. “We want to inspire young Moroccans,” says Hasni. “This is about showing that sailing belongs to everyone.”
