Light wind shuffles leaderboard at Europeans

Day three of the 49er and 49erFX Europeans was a light wind day which saw big changes to the leaderboard in the FX fleet. Two of the top three going into the third day of racing - Finland and Italy - dropped out of podium positions after the light breeze. The battle at the top of the leaderboard has now changed to a fight between Belgium, Poland, France and Canada. Leading this pack is Isaura Maenhaut and Anouk Geurts (BEL) three points ahead of the Polish team of Alexsandra Melzacka and Sandra Jankowiak. This Polish team is still unsure of their selection for the Games, so the fight is on to show the National Selectors they should be selected for Paris 2024.

After Day 3, the top 25 competitors move onto the golf fleet finals. The light breeze saw unexpected race winners, with a bullet from Oman’s Musab Al Hadi and Waleed Al Kendi's final yellow fleet. Peters and Sterritt (GBR) regain the overall lead with team mates Grummett and Hawes following in second

The young team from the Netherlands of Laila van der Meer and Bjarne Bouwer had a stellar day scoring a third and two bullets in the blue fleet. This boosted them up the leaderboard into second place, trailing defending World Champions from Italy, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti. Lower down the leaderboard Sarah Newberry and David Liebenberg who qualified for gold fleet in 23rd place have earned their ticket to represent the USA at the Olympics this summer. This is after their teammates and trials rivals Carson Crain and Lindsay Gimple missed the gold fleet cut off.

Another light breeze day expected for racing today, stay tuned for some interesting changes. All results are available online.
