International sailors taking part in the Gran Canaria SSL Gold Cup had the unique opportunity to experience sailing in a Canarian Vela Latina dinghy on Sunday. Among them was Robert Scheidt, the captain of the Brazilian team and a five-time Olympic medalist, who expressed keen interest in this distinct sailing style. Robert took the helm of 'Disa Roque Nublo ULPGC', one of the two boats used for the introduction, the other being 'Minerva'.
Sailors from Brazil, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, and Argentina demonstrated that sailing transcends language barriers, with only minimal explanation needed to understand and enjoy it.
The Canarian Vela Latina (lateen sailing), intrinsic to the islands and particularly popular in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was a highlight at the Gran Canaria SSL Gold Cup. These boats, deeply rooted in tradition with their wooden structures and unique upwind sailing technique, attract numerous enthusiasts, especially during the city’s coastal regattas.
