USA leapfrog Spain into #2 in SSL Nations Ranking

The USA are continuing their climb up the SSL Nations Ranking, moving into the number 2 spot, behind Great Britain in the May 2023 update. This comes at the expense of Spain, who are back at #3 having risen to second place in April.

USA currently have five Skippers in the top 60 and two Crew in the top 10 of the SSL Global Rankings. Their outstanding crew, with #1 ranked Victor Diaz de Leon and #9 ranked Willem van Waay, are the differentiator between them and the other top nations. Italy is the only other nation which has two crew in the top 10.

The battle for the final spot on the podium of the SSL Nations Ranking is extremely tight, with only 22 points separating 3rd from 6th. Spain are currently in 3rd on 210 points, with France just 4 points back, followed by Italy on 225 points and The Netherlands on 232. The Allianz Sailing World Championships at The Hague, taking place in August, could really shake things up amongst these nations.

Great Britain continues to lead the way in the SSL Nations Ranking, with 159 points, a healthy lead of 40 points over the USA. The rising stars of the British Sailing Team in the ILCA 7 are helping them maintain their lead, with Elliot Hanson ranked #24 and Micky Beckett at #39. The Nacra 17 pairing of John Gimson (#4 Skipper) and Anna Burnet (#3 Crew) continue to lead the way for the Brits, with their win at the Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia in Palma bagging them another 1000 SSL Ranking Points.

The SSL Nations Ranking is calculated by adding the top five ranked Skippers and top two ranked Crew from each Nation in the SSL Global Ranking, to give a points total. The lower the total, the higher your Nation is ranked.

Mark has been managing sailing websites since 1996, always being at the forefront of technology, and now manages the combined Sail-World.com and YachtsandYachting.com network. He has covered events such as the International Moth World Championship and Cowes Week, focusing on the sailors' thoughts and words.
