Five months to go to the SSL Finals 2019 in Nassau, Bahamas, and the list of finalists who will attend it is slowly shaping up. Other than the 2019 Star World Champions, Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and Bruno Prada (BRA), who traditionally claim an invitation to the December event, the reigning Match Racing World Champion Torvar Mirsky (AUS) will be among the wild cards at the Star Sailors League Finals 2019.
Mirsky has been one of the young promises of Match Racing, winning with his Mirsky Racing Team, his first WMRT event at only 23 years in Portugal, to be crowned King of the Mountain at the 2011 St.Moritz Match Cup and claiming the Bermuda event that same year. He was born in Perth, Western Australia, 33 years ago and after some time off sailing to get his University degree in Engineering, he’s back on the sailing scenario proving his match racing skills are still there. And not just those.
Torvar attended the U30 Star World Championship in Miami last February, crewing for his Aussie under 30 mate Luke Payne, who is a team member of the AC syndicate American Magic; then moved to the helm for the 2019 Star Europeans/SSL Breeze Grand Slam in Riva del Garda, Italy, a couple of months ago, and then to the Star World Championship in Porto Cervo, where, with Irish Star expert Robert O’Leary, found the right pace and finished 8th in a highly competitive fleet.
He’s busy this week defending the Match Racing World Title he claimed in 2017 in China. The final event of the World Match Racing Tour is being held in Marstrand during the renowed Match Cup Sweden, and Torvar is racing this very afternoon a do or die match vs Bernsston Sailing Team during the repechage to access to the quarter finals tomorrow. There he will meet among others, the six times Match Racing World Champ Ian Williams (GBR), who participated to the 2015 SSL Finals finishing 10.
