Trofeo Princesa Sofía - Final Day: Tita/ Banti dominate Nacra17, Sarah Douglas Queen of ILCA6

For this last day of World Series 1 at Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Palma, Ruggero TitaCaterina Banti (16 pts) majestically claimed the Nacra17 title and Medal Race. The Italian won 9 races out of 13. Their worst result being 3rd place... Behind them, Finnish Sinem KurtbayAkseli Keskinen (56 pts) are solid 2nd and British John GimsonAnna Burnet (56 pts) finish 3rd. 

It was the first-ever SSL 1000 event in mixed 470, and Jordi Xammar/ Nora Brugman may have become a new reference in this category. Winners earlier this season in Mallorca and Villamoura, the Spanish imposed their pace and won with a 17-point margin in front of Giacomo FerrariBianca Caruso (45 pts) and French Kevin PeponnetAloïse Retornaz (50 pts).

In ILCA6 (Women Laser), Canadian Sarah Douglas wins the category by a comfortable 31-point lead over British Hannah Snellgrove (59 pts). It is the best result for SSL Team Canada helmsman since her victory at the 2019 Pan American Games. Greek Vasileia Karachaliou finally finishes 3rd with 62 points.

Despite Matt Wearn's victory in ILCA7's Medal Race, British Mickael Beckett gets the top spot for 6 points over the Aussie. German Philipp Buhl (68 pts) could not resist Wearn's come back. He ends 3rd in front of Cypriot Pavlos Kontides (6th) and Tonci Stipanovic (7th). 

Winning Medal Race was also not enough for Martine GraelKahena Kunze. The Olympic Champions have to bow before Dutch World Champion  Odile Van Aanholt paired up with Annette Duetz. The Dutch win by 10 points over the Brazilians. Italian Jana GermaniGiorgia Bertuzzi finally get 3rd spot in front of Belgian Isaura Maenhaut/ Anouk Geurts for just 2 points. 

In 49er,  Erwan FischerClément Pequin (50 pts) "finished the job," as they told StarSailors.com yesterday. It is the first victory in an SSL 1000 event for the French. Team USA Ian BarrowsHans Henken are 2nd (53 pts) and team Poland Mikołaj StaniulJakub Sztorch, 3rd with 74 points.

Next, SSL 1000 event will take place in the USA with The Congressional Cup (April 18-23), World Match-Racing Tour's first event. Olympic series are back at Semaine Olmympic de Hyères in France (April 23-30).

Trofeo Princesa Sofia is an SSL 1000-point event that counts for SSL Ranking

  • Competitions are classified into eight categories.
  • Each category is granted a number of points to be awarded to the athletes, from 10 to 4000 points - 1000 points at Trofeo Princesa Sofia. 
  • SSL points are awarded to account for 100% for the first year, 50% for the second year, and 0% for the third year
  • The athletes' six best results are taken into account according to the system mentioned above (and all local regattas)
  • All athletes who complete a round of a regatta included in the Ranking obtain at least one point.
